Your Opinion, Please

As an experiment, I exchanged the sunset photo that was in the header above for some original art from a talented local artist, Nick. We had to tweak it a bit to get it to fit and it can be tweaked some more. But I would like to know if anyone has a feeling, pro or con, about the new (and maybe temporary) look.

Huh?

Speaking to American troops in Iraq:

“The reason you guys  are here is because of 9/11. The U.S. got attacked and 3,000… human beings got killed because of al Qaeda.”

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta

This is news to me. I didn’t know Iraq had any connection with 9/11 and thought there were no al Qaeda in Iraq when we invaded. Does Leon know something we don’t know? Was he brainwashed, or just jet-lagged?

Goodness, Our Financial Sky is Falling!

If only there were a simple way to fix this nation’s monumental, complicated debt problem.

Actually, there is.

We just need to apply basic common-sense economics. Under President Bill Clinton our national debt rose from $4.2 trillion to $5.7 trillion, and he left office with a budget surplus. When President George W. Bush left, we had a  $10.6 trillion national debt (as well as a $1.5 trillion deficit, and a deep recession). The almost $5 trillion debt increase under Bush was primarily caused by his two unnecessary wars and tax cuts that mostly helped the rich. President Obama has increased the debt another $3.7 trillion to shore up the faltering economy he inherited.

This is how to fix it: raise taxes on the one income group who did the best financially during the last decade and who can afford it the most. That would be the top one per cent of income earners, who took home more than a fifth of all personal income, own more than a third of all the wealth, and pay less taxes than they ever did.

Then trim down the bloated defense budget, and stop beating up on the poor, sick, disabled, students, unemployed, and others who are struggling enough already.

Problem solved.

Cut Off The Bitch’s Head, Just Don’t Show Her Boobs

The U.S. Supreme Court, by a 7-2 vote, recently decided California could not ban the sale of violent video games to minors,  but they could deny sale of  material with sexual content to minors and adults. In other words, the Court ruled in favor of violence over sex.

According to Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority:

“the obscenity exception to the First Amendment does not cover whatever a legislature finds shocking, but only depictions of ‘sexual conduct’ …violence is not part of the obscenity that the Constitution permits to be regulated.”

More logical was Justice Steven Breyer, writing in dissent:

“But what sense does it make to forbid selling to a 13-year-old boy a magazine with an image of a nude woman, while protecting a sale to that 13-year-old of an interactive video game in which he actively, but virtually, binds and gags the woman, then tortures and kills her? What kind of First Amendment would permit the government to protect children by restricting sales of that extremely violent video game only when the woman — bound, gagged, tortured, and killed — is also topless?”

Good questions indeed.
