The Real Issue for Biden: 44,000 Vigilante Vote Challengers

By Greg Palast/ GregPalast.com/ July 13, 2024

Instead of counting Joe Biden’s brain cells, we need to be counting “vigilantes,” the self-proclaimed vote fraud hunters who, under new state laws, can challenge the vote of their fellow Americans and stop their votes from being counted.

In 2022, 88 self-appointed GOP vote fraud hunters challenged 180,000 voters’ registrations in Georgia.

They successfully removed thousands of voters from the rolls in that state.  The group behind the attack on US citizens, True the Vote, glorying in their success in Georgia, has rolled out the vote challenge operation to several swing states and––Are you ready for this numbers?––they signed up 44,000 volunteer vigilante vote challengers so far this year.

We’ve gone from 88 vigilantes in one state to 44,000 challengers in dozens of states.  That number, 44,000, should ring a bell.  It happens to be Biden’s margin of victory in 2020.  Therefore, if each vigilante can wipe even one voter off the rolls in a swing state, there goes the election.

And some of those vigilantes challenge thousands of voters in a single county.

I’m non-partisan:  I don’t tell folks how to vote.  But it’s a cold fact that every single vigilante vote challenger so far is Republican–including top GOP officials.

In 2022, we exposed the mass attack on a staggering 180,000 voters in Georgia organized by True the Vote, based in Texas, and their comrades in the Republican Party.

Working with our allies NAACP, Rainbow/PUSH, New Georgia Project and Black Voters Matter, we were able to block most of the challenges, yet thousands of voters still lost their right to a ballot.

As key voting rights attorney, Mark Elias, has warned,

“If the virus of mass voter challenges is an epidemic threatening to sweep across the nation and undermine our democracy, then Georgia is patient zero. We have already seen the virus of voter challenges spread. New Republican election vigilante groups are cropping up around the country to lodge mass challenges against unsuspecting voters.”

While True the Vote has already signed up 44,000 vote challengers, they are not alone.  Trump’s lawyer, Cleta Mitchell, is using a system called “EagleAI” that has already challenged 10,000 voters in Florida. Now, they are preparing to attack in swing states. Look out Pennsylvania: vigilantes have already challenged 16,000 in Pittsburg.

And there are other groups joining the vigilante vote challenger game.  In Arizona, where Biden squeaked by Trump by only 10,457 votes, the vigilantes call themselves the Pigpen Project mounting challenges on top of those challenged by True the Votes’ MAGA-nauts.

All the groups are using the same bogus methods of targeting voters as True the Vote––which has not found a single illegal voter despite the hundreds of thousands challenged.

Vigilantes in Arizona are flying drones over ballot drop boxes, and in some cases, showing up at the ballot boxes with weapons.

Teresa Mabry of the Arizona Democracy Resource Center, told me,

“They had drones going over people, policing people. [Election] employees were afraid to go into their offices, we sent out teams out to make sure they would be OK.

“So when you’re showing up at a polling location and militarized our military looking uniforms, nice goggles and with weapons, or just posting out in front of these boxes, you were trying to intimidate folks who have experienced a history and a legacy of violence.”

And back in swing state Georgia, the GOP legislature passed a new law, SB189, that will make it much harder for county clerks to reject the challenges.

Gerald Griggs, President of the Georgia NAACP told me,

“So I fully expect 2024 to be the wild, wild West when it comes to election challenges. So if there were 180,000 challenged before, I’m looking at more maybe 300,000 or 400,000 [in Georgia alone]. They want to make it easier to challenge and harder to vote.

“So they will have unlimited voter challenges both before and after the election, unlike in 2022, when there was a cut off period for the actual, voter challenges. So vigilantes are going to be out in mass. “

If no one challenges the challengers, Biden is toast in Georgia. Same for Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin and Texas.

This is the true danger to democracy in 2024. Our job this year is to make sure that the voters, not vigilantes, pick our President.

In 2020, the Palast team’s film, Vigilante: Georgia’s Vote Suppression Hitman was a crucial tool for voting rights groups to overturn the vigilante challenges.  Still, thousands of those challenges went through, including the successful removal of African-American soldiers assigned outside Georgia.  But an American soldier, whatever color, should not lose their vote because they are instructed by the Commander-in-Chief to deploy away from home.

While we stopped many of those challenges, and successfully re-registered thousands with our voting rights partners, the laws and court rulings have blessed the vigilante vote hunts for 2024.

Because True the Vote’s vigilante challenges have gone national, so must our investigation and film.  Therefore, on September 6, we will launch, Vigilantes Inc.: America’s New Vote Suppression Hitmen.

Narrated by Rosario Dawson and produced by Martin Sheen, Maria Florio (Oscar, best documentary) and George DiCaprio.

Should Biden Step Down For Kamala?

Halitics/July 8, 2024

Democrats are divided as to who should take on the dangerous dictator wannabe Donald Trump. I make my case for Kamala with Hal Ginsberg on Halitics as we continue our weekly analysis of the latest political news on Hal’s YouTube videocast.

A U.S. Labor Party?

Letter to the Editor/Monterey County Herald: Congratulations to Britain’s Labour Party for their resounding victory over the long-ruling Conservative Party. My question is, why can’t we have a Labor Party here? The Democratic Party once filled that role, but both parties now rely on billionaires and corporations to finance their campaigns. The Republican Party is hopeless, but ideally the Democratic Party might wake up and realize working people, the middle and lower classes, and labor unions should be their true constituents.

Democrats And Biden Have An Obvious Choice

By Arlen Grossman

Published in OpEd News and DailyKos.com (with many comments)

Now that our ultra-conservative Supreme Court has handed Donald Trump permission to be what he always hoped he would be, a dictator, the Democratic Party absolutely must take him down at the ballot box.

Some Democrats believe that based on President Biden’s history and his accomplishments thus far, he deserves to keep his nomination and run against Trump. That would be a critical mistake.

I’m in the other camp, with those who believe the urgency to keep Trump out of the oval office requires a Democratic candidate at the top of his or her game: a younger, sharper, more dynamic contender in clear contrast to the older, dishonest, mentally challenged and lawbreaking Republican nominee.

Joe Biden is not that person at this crucial time. As great as he has been, at 81 years old, his abilities are unquestionably on the decline. In addition, his poll numbers have lagged consistently behind Trump all year, in large part because the voters believe him to be too old to run the country for four more years.

The Democratic Party needs the best possible candidate they can find to run against the abhorant and dangerous Trump. There are several capable politicians that could fill that bill, but Kamala Harris would be the logical choice.

Harris is articulate, talented, has a name familiar to most voters, and earned a reputation for herself fighting for women’s reproductive rights, a proven popular cause. In addition, she would inherit the Biden-Harris team, including Joe’s advisors and strategists, and critically, the tens of millions of dollars in campaign funds.

This in no way disrespects Joe Biden. His accomplishments are evident, and his career exceptional. Importantly, his place in history would be enhanced were he to sacrifice his role as president for the good of the Democratic Party and the American people.

Biden may not be at that point yet. He seems determined (with support from his family) to go the distance and defeat Trump once again. Ideally, he would quickly realize that he is not as capable as he was in 2020, and the most courageous and heroic move he can perform now is to let someone younger and more capable finish the job.

Most important of all, we need to defeat Donald Trump, a man determined (with support from his numerous MAGA loyalists) to take over the government, destroy our democratic traditions, and make the United States his own personal fiefdom.

Nothing could be more urgent and necessary for Democrats than winning the 2024 election and ridding this great nation of this ignorant, self-serving tyrant.

The New America 2.0 is Not a Democracy; it’s an Oligarchy

The only remedy at this late stage in this 50+ yearlong campaign to remake America is a massive revolt this fall at the ballot box, turning Congress over to Democrats while holding the White House.

By Thom Hartmann/ TheHartmannReport/ July 3, 2024

Kevin Roberts, who heads the Heritage Foundation (largely responsible for Project 2025) just implicitly threatened Americans that if we don’t allow him and his hard-right movement to complete their transformation of America from a democratic republic into an authoritarian state, there will be blood in the streets.

“We’re in the process of taking this country back,” he told a TV audience, adding:

“The reason that they are apoplectic right now, the reason that so many anchors on MSNBC, for example, are losing their minds daily is because our side is winning. And so I come full circle on this response and just want to encourage you with some substance that we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

He’s not wrong. America has been changed as a result of a series of corrupt rulings by Republicans (exclusively; not one of these rulings has been joined by a Democratic appointee) which have changed America’s legal and political systems themselves.

As Roberts notes, this is really the largest issue we all face, and our mainstream media are totally failing to either recognize or clearly articulate how radically different our country is now, how far the Republicans on the Court have dragged us away from both our Founder’s vision and the norms and standards of a functioning, modern democratic republic.

First, in a series of decisions — the first written by that notorious corporatist Lewis Powell (of “Powell Memo” fame) — Republicans on the Court have functionally legalized bribery of politicians and judges by both the morbidly rich and massive corporations.

This started with Powell’s 1978 Bellotti opinion, which opened the door (already cracked a bit) to the idea that corporations are not only “persons” under the Constitution, but, more radically, are entitled to the human rights the Framers wrote into the Bill of Rights (the first ten amendments).

Using that rationale, Powell asserted that corporations, like rich people (from the Buckley decision that preceded Belotti by two years), are entitled to the First Amendment right of free speech. But he took it a radical step farther, ruling that because corporations don’t have mouths they can use to speak with, their use of money to spend supporting politicians or carpet-bombing advertising for a candidate or issue is free speech that can’t be tightly regulated.

Citizens United, another all-Republican decision with Clarence Thomas the deciding vote (after taking millions in bribes), expanded that doctrine for both corporations and rich people, creating new “dark money” systems that wealthy donors and companies can use to hide their involvement in their efforts to get the political/legal/legislative outcomes they seek.

Last week the Republicans on the Court took even that a huge step farther, declaring that when companies or wealthy people give money to politicians in exchange for contracts, legislation, or other favors, as long as the cash is paid out after the deed is done it’s not a bribe but a simple “gratuity.”

So, first off, they’ve overthrown over 240 years of American law and legalized bribery.

Last week they also gutted the ability of federal regulatory agencies to protect average people, voters, employees, and even the environment from corporations that seek to exploit, pollute, or even engage in wage theft. This shifted power across the economic spectrum from a government elected by we the people to the CEOs and boards of directors of some of America’s most predatory and poisonous companies.

Finally, in the Trump immunity case, the Court ruled that presidents are immune from prosecution under criminal law, regardless of the crimes they commit, so long as they assert those crimes are done as part of their “official” responsibilities. And who decides what’s “official”? The six Republicans on the Supreme Court.

These actions — corporate personhood, money as speech, ending the Chevron deference to regulatory agencies, and giving the president life-and-death powers that historically have only been held by kings, shahs, mullahs, dictators, and popes — have fundamentally altered the nature of our nation.

It’s almost impossible to overstate the significance of this, or its consequences. We no longer live in America 1.0; this is a new America, one more closely resembling the old Confederacy, where wealthy families and giant companies make the rules, enforce the rules, and punish those who irritate or try to obstruct them.

In America 2.0, there is no right to vote; governors and secretaries of state can take away your vote without even telling you (although they still must go to court to take away your gun).

They can destroy any politician they choose by simply pouring enough cash into the campaign system (including dark, untraceable cash).

The president can now go much farther than Bush’s torturing and imprisoning innocent people in Gitmo without legal process: he can now shoot a person on Fifth Avenue in plain sight of the world and simply call it a necessary part of his job. Or impoverish or imprison you or me with the thinnest of legal “official” rationales.

America 2.0 is not a democracy; it’s an oligarchy, as I wrote about in The Hidden History of American Oligarchy. The South has finally — nearly — won the Civil War.

While it will be months or more likely years before all of these new powers the Republicans on the Court have given the president, rich people, and corporations begin to dawn on most Americans, they will, step-by-step transform this country into something more closely resembling Hungary or Russia than the democracies of Europe and Southeast Asia.

The only remedy at this late stage in this 50+ yearlong campaign to remake America is a massive revolt this fall at the ballot box, turning Congress — by huge majorities — over to Democrats while holding the White House.

If we fail at this, while there will be scattered pockets of resistance for years, it’ll be nearly impossible to reverse the course that America’s rightwing billionaires have set us on.

There has never been a more critical time in the history of our nation outside of the last time rich oligarchs tried to overthrow our democracy, the Civil War. Like then, the stakes are nothing less than the survival of a nation of, by, and for we the people.

DEBATE FALLOUT

Biden disappoints as his disastrous debate performance points to a change at the top of the Democratic ticket in order to stop the train wreck that would be another Trump presidency. Joe proved at age 81 he’s not up for the fight. He needs to step down and let Kamala take on the MAGA cult leader. Hal Ginsberg returns from a week in Europe, and comes to a country in chaos and an out-of-control Supreme Court. We discuss the chaotic mess Americans must find a way to deal with, and hopefully, overcome. https://youtu.be/_0LkYzzalhw?feature=shared THE AUDIO HAS BEEN FIXED FROM A PREVIOUS VIDEO!

The Most Selfish Presidential Candidate in American History: Trump. Let’s Not Have Another.

By Arlen Grossman

Published at Daily Kos/ July 2, 2024

Published OpEdNews, July 3, 2024

It’s pretty much a given that Donald Trump cares only about himself. Everything he does is to promote himself, and if he is elected again, to give himself dictatorial power. In other words, Trump is the most selfish candidate in the history of this country. He putting his personal future ahead of what would be best for the country.

Now we have another candidate doing something similar, putting his personal plans ahead of the country. When it comes to integrity and real patriotism President Joe Biden is far superior to Trump and his MAGA cultists. But are Joe and Jill Biden planning their future with their personal desires ahead of what’s right for the country? It appears that way.

Joe Biden is only going to get older and less competent in the next few years. And what voters saw in Thursday’s debate is the decline of a great man and a great president, no longer in his prime. But we have to ask ourselves. will Joe Biden be an excellent president four years from now, when he will be turning 86 years old? The answer is obvious. He will not be in the best condition to perform his duties as president. He will only be less capable than he is now.

For the good of the Democratic Party and the country, now teetering on the edge of a possible Trump dictatorship and a fascist-style presidency, Biden must put the future of the country ahead of his personal desires.

If Biden stays, he will be essentially doing what Donald Trump is doing, thinking of himself and his future ahead of what is best for the country.

One selfish candidate on the Republican ballot is enough. We don’t need another selfish candidate in the opposition party thinking of himself over what is best for the country. Another Democratic candidate, Vice-President Kamala Harris being the most logical, would have the abilities and strength to defeat Trump, which is priority number one.

Joe Biden needs to step down and give way to a younger, stronger and more vibrant candidate. The stakes are too high to be thinking of himself . Now is not the time for Biden to put himself ahead of what’s best for the country.

Biden would never be as selfish as Donald Trump (nobody is), but he would still be selfish. The future of our country is on the line, Joe. Let someone else finish your job.

Trump: The Most Radical of All

The excellent writer Anne Applebaum of The Atlantic wrote an interesting article about the recent parliamentary elections in Europe, and what they really meant.

Trump Is Not America’s Le Pen–He’s worse, By Anne Applebaum, June 11.

This excerpt from that article says a lot about we are confronting:

“Donald Trump is not like these politicians. The former president is not tacking to the center, and he is not trying to appear less confrontational. Nor does he seek to embrace existing alliances. On the contrary, almost every day he sounds more extreme, more unhinged, and more dangerous. Meloni has not inspired her followers to block the results of an election. Le Pen does not rant about retribution and revenge. Wilders has agreed to be part of a coalition government, meaning that he can compromise with other political leaders, and has promised to put his notorious hostility to Muslims “on ice.” Even Orbán, who has gone the furthest in destroying his country’s institutions and who has rewritten Hungary’s constitution to benefit himself, doesn’t brag openly about wanting to be an autocrat. Trump does. People around him speak openly about wanting to destroy American democracy too. None of this seems to hurt him with voters, who appear to welcome this destructive, radical extremism, or at least not to mind it.

American media clichés about Europe are wrong. In fact, the European far right is rising in some places, but falling in others. And we aren’t “in danger” of following European voters in an extremist direction, because we are already well past them. If Trump wins in November, America could radicalize Europe, not the other way around.“

Did Donald Trump Lose the Debate? Maybe

By Arlen Grossman

Published in Daily Kos

Published in OpEdNews

Democrats might want to consider stepping back from that steep ledge. The first “debate” between President Joe Biden and the 45th president, Donald Trump, is over, and at first glance, was a total disaster for Biden and the Democrats.

But at second glance, maybe not so much. Anybody who watched the debate could see President Biden looking every day of his 81 years, maybe more like 91. He appeared lost and confused, not at all like the guy we saw months earlier, at his State of the Union Speech. Chalk it up as a big loss.

But what about Donald Trump—did he win the “debate”? At first glance, yes. But maybe not.

Allow me to explain. Trump has his solid base of Republican cultists, millions of them. To them, he is a divine gift from their Christian God, and can do no wrong—ever.

Still, they do not make up the majority of the American electorate. Trump will still need Republican moderates (we will assume there are some) and independents to win the presidency. They are not in the bag yet.

While Biden lost the debate, it is less than clear that Donald Trump won. Those Republican moderates and independents had to have seen the blustery, negative, vindictive, lying and insulting man we know all too well. I sincerely doubt he “won” many of those undecided voters, and he likely turned off more than a few.

Perhaps the debate was not a total disaster for Democrats. They still have to decide if they stick with Biden, or let a younger, more vibrant Democrat carry the mantle. The Democratic Party is split right now on that issue, and it will not be easy to fix the problem.

Fortunately, there are ways, and there is time. November 5 is more than four months away.

I believe Biden’s physical and mental health has to be a major part of the decision to continue having him run. There are plenty of signs he has lost a lot off his fastball, and it will have to be determined if that is the normal aging process or some unspoken, undisclosed disability. If it is the latter, a change in candidates is imperative.

Donald Trump has plenty of his own issues. Despite his insistence that he is a genius, nobody really believes that. His numerous verbal gaffes and bizarre, unintelligible rants are signs his mind is slipping even faster than usual. (It should not be overlooked that his father, Fred Trump, had Alzheimer’s Disease).

As I noted in a previous commentary: several prominent mental health professionals have expressed concern about Trump’s deteriorating brain function. Dr. John Gartner, a former professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, has been vocal about his professional analysis of Trump, asserting a stark difference between the candidates: “Biden is aging. Trump is dementing.”

Dr. Elisabeth Zoffmann, a forensic psychiatrist and an Associate Clinical Professor of Forensic and General Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, believes that Trump is displaying a range of behaviors that suggest cognitive challenges if not impairment. She concludes Trump appears to be suffering from Behavioral Variant Fronto-Temporal Dementia (BvFTD), which drastically affects personality, behavior, and social interactions.

And let’s think for a moment about expectations. For Biden, if he stays in, his bar is set very low, which could work to his advantage in a second debate.

No matter what, Trump’s clueless base and moronic Republican leaders like Lindsay Graham, Ted Cruz, Speaker Mike Johnson, and all the ones who lust for the chance to be his V.P., are going to stick with the guy, as will Fox News and the rest of the right-wing media propaganda machine.

But Trump will not be able to hide his numerous deficiencies, faults, and serious personality flaws. His obvious craziness will be on display for four more months, and that should give Democrats a fighting chance to win the presidency and importantly, Congress.

So, Democrats, right now, please walk away from that ledge. There is actually hope.
