President Obama is going even farther than President George W. Bush in taking executive powers to levels comparable to many other autocratic regimes. The president is on board with gutting many of the civil liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, while huge bipartisan majorities in Congress look the other way.
Why is this happening at a time when the terrorist threat has subsided and Osama bin Laden is dead? How much worse would our liberties by trashed if there had been another 9/11 type terrorist attack? I shudder to even think about it.
Does this sudden surge of civil liberties pullbacks have anything to do with the rise of the Occupy movement? Does this new take-to-the-street movement scare the power elite so much, that they want to ensure that martial law is in force to counter it? I wouldn’t be surprised were that to be true.
We are clearly heading down a dangerous and scary path.
Arlen Grossman, neither side for the most part gives a damn about the U.S. Constitution.
They do when it serves their purpose, Jeffrey. And they ignore it otherwise.
Arlen Grossman, you make a valid point.
Scary stuff indeed. I may not reside in the US, but I shudder at the thought of other countries that may follow such an approach on civil liberties.
I shudder along with you.
