The Future of American Elections

The spending on Tuesday’s Wisconsin state senate recall election exceeded $35 million, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, which tracks political money. Some believe it will top $40 million.

Money raised for all the 116 legislative campaigns in Wisconsin last year totaled about half that, $19.3 million.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the future of our election campaigns, post-Citizens United.

Elections will be won not by the votes of ordinary people, but by the money poured in to influence the votes of ordinary people.
