It’s become so obvious, even conservative NY Times columnist David Brooks can see it. The Republican party has been taken over by extremists, i.e. fanatics who hate taxes, government, and people who don’t look and behave like they do. That last sentence was mine, but even Brooks recognizes “the Republican Party may no longer be a normal party.”
“The members of this movement do not accept the logic of compromise…The members of this movement do not accept the legitimacy of scholars and intellectual authorities…The members of this movement have no sense of moral decency. ..The members of this movement have no economic theory worthy of the name.”
This has been obvious to many of us for a long time. But when a prominent conservative like Brooks lays it out in print, it is worth noting. I suspect a lot of Americans are starting to feel the same way about the fanatics that control the GOP. The good news is that if the Republicans continue to overreach, there will be enough pushback to halt their extreme agenda and stimulate the lethargic progressive movement.
